Gennady Golovkin gets a reality check

We hate to tell you we told you we so, but we did say Gennady Golovkin vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko was going to be a banger. Check out the DAZN video highlights above. In a narrow unanimous decision, “GGG” squeaked by Derevyanchenko, much to boxing Twitter’s dismay:

Lucky for Derevyanchenko, he’s an Uber ride away from Wall Street because his stock just rose astronomically. With a convincing showing against one of boxing’s biggest and most beloved fighters under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden, the Ukranian certainly hasn’t seen his world last title shot.

In the other corner, the fight showed that Golovkin may be in the late rounds with a losing card against Father Time. The 37-year-old has made a Hall of Fame career fighting on his front foot, but the fight showed he may no longer have those buzzsaw-like qualities to bulldoze through quality middleweights like Derevyanchenko. Given the fight wasn’t just an off-night, Golovkin might finally be mortal.

Shields’ homecoming spoiled by weigh-in fireworks

Unfortunately, the other big fight this weekend between Claressa “T-Rex” Shields versus Ivana Habazin was canceled due to some major drama that sent the Croatian’s manager to the ER. You can read more about what went down in this still DEVELOPING STORY.

“Boots” on the ground for Shields’ absence

The show must go on. Stepping up to fill the main event void for Shields was the prodigious youngster Jaron “Boots” Ennis. In three rounds of utter dominance, Ennis swiped opponent Demian Daniel Fernandez with more rights and lefts than a thirsty dude on Tinder before the fight was stopped in the third round.

Shields even popped up on Twitter to congratulate her main card stand-in.
