Junior Middleweight Patrick Day has succumbed to injuries he suffered in last Saturday’s fight against Charles Conwell. He was 27.

“On behalf of Patrick’s family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury,” promoter Lou DiBella said in a statement. “He was a son, brother, and good friend to many. Pat’s kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met.”

The New York-native had been hospitalized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago since the brutal 10th-round knockout loss which left him with traumatic brain injuries. Conwell, a 2016 US Olympian, was heartbroken over his fallen foe. “”I never meant for this to happen to you,” Conwell wrote. “All I ever wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back I would. No one deserves for this to happen to them. I replay the fight over and over in my head thinking what if this never happened and why did it happen to you.

Although the boxing world rallied around the popular fighter, the situation was dire as Day had never regained consciousness after being knocked out and was put in medically-induced a coma. According to ESPN, Day was surrounded by his parents, family, and friends, when the decision was made to disconnect him from the machines that had been keeping him alive.

Day (17-4-1, 6 KOs), a 2012 Golden Gloves champion, was popular in the often dog-eat-dog boxing world. A fitness junkie, Day was known for spreading positivity and his 1000-watt smile both inside and outside the ring.

You can find numerous social media posts talking about what a great human being Day was. A saint. RIP Patrick. Our condolences to his family and friends.
