Golden Boy blue-chipper Jaime Munguia (34-0) is kicking off 2020 with his highly-anticipated middleweight debut. The 23-year-old Mexican champion is moving on up to 160 to fight Irishman Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan (30-3).
While Spike O’Sullivan sounds like a character from Martin Scorcese’s Gangs of New York, he’s no jobber with competitive fights against Billy Joe Saunders, Chris Eubank Jr., and David Lemieux. Plus, he has an epic, vintage strongman mustache.
Munguia vs O’Sullivan is going down in San Antonio, Texas at the Alamodome and will be streamed on DAZN. Munguia vacated his WBO light-middleweight title for this move up as he’s being groomed for bigger-name fighters like Canelo Alvarez and GGG. Without the pressure of being a world champion, Munguia has a chance to develop as he’s still only 23 with a bright future ahead.
