Fighting on Mexican Independence is a privilege, not a right. The national holiday is an annual boxing tradition, producing some of the most memorable fights of the modern era. Started by Julio Cesar Chavez, the honor of fighting on the hallowed date of Sept. 14 was passed onto Oscar De La Hoya, who has since given way to Canelo Alvarez. Now, the next wave of Mexican boxers is ready to accept the torch. Two of De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotion’s brightest stars, Ryan Garcia and Jamie Munguia, will be in action this weekend in Carson, California (you can also watch on DAZN).
EDITORS NOTE: The Ryan Garcia fight versus Avery Sparrow is CANCELLED.
Although Garcia is technically on the undercard, all eyes and camera phones will be on “The Flash,” boxing’s “next big thing” who is looking to go from prospect to contender with a tough match-up against Avery “A Plus” Sparrow. Editor’s Note: Guess Ryan and all of us will have to wait.
The 22-year-old Munguia is already a world champ (WBO Junior Middleweight title) who is looking to showcase himself as a legitimate star who can take on some of the top names in the game as he moves up to 160 and now has living legend Érik Morales in his corner.
Boxing Empire caught up with both fighters on press day at the legendary Azteca Boxing Club. Here’s an EXCLUSIVE BOXING EMPIRE VIDEO of what went down.
